With Subbuteo, Snakes and Ladders and The Game of Life already referenced, we move adroitly to Hungry Hippos. My hippo factsheet tells me that these ‘river cows’ have pink sweat, which acts as sunblock. Also, I discover that they're herbivores so they don't eat people, but they do charge at people, so stay clear of a hungry hippo. Best of all, they have eyes, ears and nose on the top of their heads so they can immerse themselves in the river yet still look and listen and breathe. I experimented in the bath last night and can safely report that humans aren't arranged for that to happen. I nearly drowned trying.

The hippo factsheet also tells us what we already know: the river cows adore mud. They wallow. It's useful. It helps them cool down. And I think there should be a human equivalent. Languishing in the mire is fine. It's useful. You can actually enjoy a wallow. The trick is to know when and how to get out of the mire.

Although it's not easy, it's perfectly possible to develop some mental muscles. Think about it. Loads of adults go to the gym to work on their physical strength. Some want to tone their bodies, develop some biceps, maybe get a tummy six-pack. But it's also perfectly possible to develop mental strength – an emotional six-pack – a set of resilience skills that will allow you to cope with the weight of the world.

And while most books will expand on what mental toughness is, it's worth reflecting on what it absolutely isn't. Mental toughness is not about pretending things are okay when they're not. Neither is it about supressing negative feelings, or hiding them. It's also not about beating yourself up or winning at all costs.

So #BeMoreHippo. Have some downtime. It's okay to have a bad day.

Being authentically human is absolutely not about being happy all the time.
